Hello, our name is the ‘Diversity within Dementia Community of Interest’.

MHSOP Dementia Awareness in the Catholic Community
Working with our Communities

We are an alliance of people who meet regularly together and work to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of dementia. We do this by increasing understanding across all of our diverse communities.

We have been active for some time now and have a range of members including carers, staff, volunteers and partner organisations. The Community of Interest is hosted by Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Our partners include Nottingham City Social Services, the Alzheimer’s Society, Nottingham City Clinical Commissioning Group, Nottingham University Hospitals Audiology and Black and Minority Ethnic statutory and voluntary support organisations. For example, The Golden Shamrock Club and Marcus Garvey Day Centre.  Our group is sponsored by Ruth Hawkins, Chief Executive of Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

The group raises awareness of dementia either by providing information on a display stand in the community e.g. Asda or health centres or through short talks in community settings or at events. We actively promote healthy lifestyles as a preventative measure to reduce the risk of vascular dementia.  This is particularly important with the high prevalence of specific physical health problems within our Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities, such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

The group aspires to enable people from our diverse communities to comment and feedback on the design, planning, evaluation and delivery of dementia services, whilst promoting culturally appropriate services and equality of access to  assessments and treatments.

We want to hear from our communities so please get in touch! We are holding an Open Event on:
